[Makan Mayat] Best Hainan Chicken Rice ever~!

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I’ve been living along Raja Uda road @ Butterworth town ever since I was 4 years old. One thing famous about this road (other than the previous Yakuzas, LOL) is none other than the rows and rows of yummilicious hawker stalls lined up from end to end of this very long road.

There are so many stalls that it is difficult to tell you where it is unless i give you the GPS coordinates. LOL..

Anyhow, located at 5°25′54″N ,  100°23′4″E is a stall that sells one of the BEST Hainan Chicken Rice I’ve ever eaten in my 30 years of masked life. It’s none other than BOYD Hainan Chicken Rice.

boyd_01

The stall is located along a lorong between shophouses. You might be turned off by the location or premises but I can tell you, once you’ve tasted the food, you’ll be sure to come back again and again and again. LOL~!

boyd_02

Oh my goodness, the chicken is so smooth and juicy. The sauce compliments the chicken so well! Some other chicken rice that I’ve tried before provided a sauce so bad that the smell sticks to your throat/mouth several hours after you’ve eaten it. YUCKS.

For this one, it’s not too oily and they give you a generous amount of chicken. The picture above is for me and Mrs Mayat which is just nice. Not too much and not too little.

I’ve ordered an extra side dish which is the fish ball soup..

boyd_03

The fish ball is very nice! They’re springy and mixes well with the chicken rice. Eaten together with the provided chili sauce, everything just fits so well together and you’ll be in Hainan Chicken Rice nirvana….

boyd_04

The price for all that above plus two plates of oiled rice plus a cup of warm leung char costs us Rm12.00 which is a little above average but then.. It’s okay cause it’s SO NICE!!!

Ha Ha ha…..

Boyd Hainan Chicken rice has been awarded the title of “Hainan Chicken Rice KING” by Guang Ming Daily and they have banners and newspaper articles to prove it!

boyd_05

Ha ha… see? Not only me say it’s nice… people win award one leh!!

Oh… I not sure halal or not la…. LOL

[Makan Mayat] Mama’s Nyonya Cuisine

Friday, August 21st, 2009

It’s Friday again and today, instead of me walking over to the island as usual, my good friend and colleague Mr Isaac brought me over the island together with his housemate (who is also good friend and colleague) in his Perodua SLK™.

The traffic was horrible as it’s the last Friday before the school holidays and Penang road was jammed up pretty bad.

Anyhow, our main intention is to drop by HIKE to pick up the latest Proton Torpedo..

by_sb_01

The Nikon SB-900 is a damn cool device and if I have the guts to spend away Little Loctor’s milk fund, I’d grab it too. Ha ha ha…

Even though RM1,590 poorer, Mr Isaac was beaming ear to ear to finally own a brand new flash of his own.

by_sb_02

(Pardon the MTV angle, I thought it looks cool)

Anyhow, by 7pm Mrs Mayat reached the shop and off we go to venture out in search of a new place to whet our appetite.

Since Mrs Mayat (or probably Little Mayat inside her) was craving for Nyonya food, I punched in the GPS and within few minutes, it brought me to Abu Siti Lane and we arrived at Mama’s Nyonya Cuisine restaurant.

It’s a small restaurant with only 2 car parks in front. Ha ha… you’ll miss it if you drive too fast. We parked inside and was ushered to our table.

While looking through the menu, the waiter brought out the appetizer..

moma_01

It’s fried anchovies with onions and chillis with lime juice. It’s very interesting and I can say quite tasty too.

We ordered 3 dishes and a pot of jasmine tea. I took some photos of the simple place….

moma_02

yeah that’s Mrs Mayat on the left…

Soon our Jasmine tea arrived and it came in a rather large pot. You’ll never need to refill the pot with hot water.

moma_03

Soon after, the other dishes arrived as well. Firstly, the Kerabu Chicken & Prawns

moma_04

Wah… this is not your usual Thai style kerabu. It contains a lot of medium sized prawns sliced into halves with chunks of chicken meat. A generous amount of chili was used and it might not be suitable for you who are not tolerant to spicy food. Nevertheless, it’s still not bad.

Next up was the Jiu Hoo Char which is the fried cuttlefish with vege…

moma_05

I find this Nyonya dish a little disappointing and it is not that good. Maybe it’s because they included one type of vege which I call it as “bad smell vege”.Ha ha ha.. .sorry can’t remember the name but it tastes like parsley.

Lettuce was provided so I scoop a spoonful of the Jiu Hoo Char and wrapped it with the lettuce and eating it whole. That’s how I like to eat it… yeah.

Finally, our last dish arrived and it’s none other than Otak-Otak. Since it’s only two of us, we decided to just order one packet, thinking that it’s enough to feed both of us.

Mana tau….

moma_06

It tastes quite nice… a little better than the one in New World Park I’ll say. BUTl…. the size… and at its price.. very disappointing la…

So what’s our opinion of this restaurant?

Firstly, let’s look at the price:

  1. The appetizer (that we never asked for) - RM4.00
  2. Jasmine Tea - RM1 per person
  3. Kerabu Chicken & Prawns - RM10
  4. Jiu Hoo Char - RM10
  5. Otak-Otak - RM3 (WTH !!!)
  6. White Rice - RM1.50 per person (WTH !!!)

In addition to that, there’s 10% service charge too. And best part is, when giving back my change, the waiter seems to be expecting me to leave some tips. WOAH !!!?!?!?!

The total came to RM35.20 for two people and we’re not happy with it. I guess, if they can improve on this area, we’ll be glad to return. Otherwise….. ho ho ho …

(Makan Mayat) Sugar Dynasty Restaurant

Friday, August 14th, 2009

So today is yet another day where I walked over to Penang and waited for Mrs Mayat to pick me up at KOMTAR. This evening, Mrs Mayat decided to try out one of the several small restaurants located along Nagore Road which is pretty near to where we ate last week.

The restaurant we stepped into today is none other than ‘Sugar Dynasty’:

sugardynasty_01

The “Sugar Dynasty” actually shares the same pronunciation as “Tang Dynasty” in mandarin. Ha ha.. very clever play of words here.

The atmosphere inside is very cosy and quite relaxed with warm light. I would say this place is enough to serve maybe 20 people the most as it’s quite small.

sugardynasty_02

It’s converted from some old heritage buildings just like any other buildings along Nagore Road. The menu came and we picked our food. The main meals came with free cup of Chinese herbal tea which is a good thing..

sugardynasty_03

Since there wasn’t many customers our food came very fast. First was Mrs Mayat’s fried something something noodle in something something sauce. LOL… yeah I forgot the name liao…

sugardynasty_04

At the same time, her choice of Tong Sui came too…

sugardynasty_05

It’s boiled foo chok with barley and slice of boiled egg. Very refreshing and quite nice too.

Not long after that my meal arrived..

sugardynasty_06

Claypot Abalone Noodles with Sea Cucumber. Nyamm nyamm… the soup is very tasty and very sweet but clear. The noodles are just maggi noodles but I’m not complaining much about it as the soup + sea cucumber and what seems to be abalone is quite nice.

As side dish, I also ordered the seafood meat balls,

sugardynasty_08

It’s quite expensive but certainly tastes good. It’s quite ’springy’ and good on the taste buds together with the supplied chili sauce. Nyamm nyamm…

As for my dessert, I ordered the Mango Sago Ice …

sugardynasty_07

Well, nothing much to shout about and I believe that canned mangoes are given instead of fresh ones. Nevertheless, it’s still a refreshing end for our dinner.

The total bill came up to RM19.60 for both of us which is quite average.

After makan, I went back to business before heading home to rest.

ultramanpg

Till then… see ya! :D

Woahahhaha

p/s: Another Kelas Kamera coming TOMORROW !!

(Makan Mayat) KissA Koyotei Cafe

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Wah.. it looks like lately Loctor only write about restaurants. HA ha ha…. well, don’t blame me because I’ve been quite busy these few days without going out shooting. So since every Friday I’m walking over to Penang to meet up with Mrs Mayat for dinner I thought it will be a good opportunity to try out different restaurants in the island la…

So, yesterday night we decided to try out a Japanese restaurant which we saw last Friday during our New World Park trip. This round, it is the KissA Koyotei Cafe which is just located next to the New World Park at Jalan Hutton.

kissa_01

Parking would not be a problem if you don’t mind the RM2 / entry car park at New World. Or you can try your luck along Jalan Hutton. We were lucky as we managed to find a car park next to the restaurant itself which is F.O.C :D hahahaha

At the entrance, we were greeted by the staff with some “yamasamasehsisusahsiahoah” which I have no idea what they meant other than “welcome”. The ambiance of the outlet is very nice, making you feel very comfortable to dine there.

what tingles me is that all the staff are wearing those maid types uniform you only see in Japanese Hentai. LOLOL!!!

kissa_02

It is certainly something new and I actually appreciate that. Taking a look at their website here, I found out that sometimes they wear black as well!!

maid

So… you Japanese maid lovers… this is the place for you laa.. right in the heart of Georgetown. LOLOLOLZZ!! LMAO…

Anyways, the menu is very comprehensive and we actually had a hard time choosing what we want. Finally, we end up with a Foo Chok Udon & Shashimi Set. Nyamm nyamm…

While waiting for the food, the Japanese Maids served appertizers..

kissa_03

It’s scrambled eggs with mushrooms, carrots, veges and onions. Not bad la actually… but personally I still prefer pickles. Nevertheless, Mrs Mayat finished them up in a second..

kissa_04

Not long after that, our food came. First up was Mrs Mayat’s foo chok Udon..

kissa_05

The serving was quite big with the usual stuff. However, the Foo Chok tasted a bit too weird and I quote Mrs Mayat, “It tasted like it was soaked in beer”

Ha ha ha ha … actually we also don’t know what it’s called as the photo in the menu looked like foo chok and the Japanese Maid also tried very hard to explain it to us. (I think she’s really a Japanese)

Next up, my shashimi set arrived:

kissa_06

Wow… a lot of stuff!

There’s a tempura platter and there’s the shashimi. Miso soup and Cawanmushi was served as well together with the pickles and oranges :D

Shashimi basically is raw seafood and this set came with 3 types of raw fishes: Salmon, Tuna and another one which I think is Butterfish.

kissa_07

Not many people can stomach raw fishes but let me tell you la… this one hor… really really nice la. There is virtually zero presence of ‘fish smell’ or ’sea mud smell’ or whatever you are telling yourself to avoid trying it. The fish basically dissolves inside your mouth because it’s so fresh and smooth. Nyamm nyamm… damn nice I tell you. Wasabi is provided for you who wish to have an extra kick.

There tempura is pretty normal and tasted equally good too. Mrs Mayat stole one of the tempura prawns as it’s her favourite. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed myself with the shashimi set. Nyammm nyamm…

Green tea was served F.O.C (just like any Japanese restaurant in Japan) to wash everything down..

kissa_08

Overall, I’m quite impressed with the restaurant. Overall, the bill came up to RM52.80 inclusive of 10% service charge.

Udon Kitsune = RM12++

Shashimi Set = RM36+

Car Park + Green Tea = RM0 (oh yeah)

Bagus sekali…
