FR: Isaribi Tei Japanese Restaurant

Yesterday we were at Penang island on the look out for good Japanese food then I remembered that my colleague forwarded am email describing a certain Japanese restaurant located along Burmah Road which is a little bit hidden from plain view. So with my knowledge (or lack of) of Burmah Road I turned into the road from KOMTAR and headed straight until I reached the centuries-old Burmah Road Gospel Hall church and quickly turn right into the car park of ‘127 Coffee Shop’ hawker center.

The Isaribi Tei Japanese restaurant can be entered via the car park through its backdoor.

The place is decorated in a very Balinese yet Japanese concept. Nice potted plants and water features adorn the whole place which creates a very pleasing and relaxing environment to have your meal in.

Other than the dining area there’s a Sushi bar as well as a alcoholic bar. Very nice I’d say!

We took quite a long time to go through the menu because there are simply TOO MUCH choices for us. I noticed that they also serve the very elite Kobe Beef. Nyamm nyamm… .one day I should try it !!!

In the end, since we do not plan to stuff and gorge ourselves silly we settled with the chicken teriyaki set, claypot udon and I added a plate of some sushi which I forgot the name liao…

Genmai green tea was provided Free of Charge as normal Japanese Restaurants will provide (except that Sakae Sushi which charge RM1 for green tea. APARRRR LAAA)

Since we’re the earliest there (~12pm) our food came to our table in a few minutes.

The Salmon Sushi came first..

Man.. they are BIG. Not like your usual Sushi King size but at least 1.5 times bigger! Inside the sushi are crab sticks, pickled white carrot, cucumber and seaweed. While the toppings are slices of raw salmon, salad dressing and chopped spring onions.

Wasabi is provided on the side.

Wah… this is the 2nd time I’ve eaten Sushis this size. The first time was in a restaurant under the railway in Hibiya, Tokyo :) (WOahahhaha..)

They taste MARVELOUS and satisfying. I am unable to fit one whole piece into my mouth so I broke it into halves. Ha ha ha…

Next up was my Chicken Teriyaki set:

It came with Miso Soup and Rice. Side dishes were pickles and mashed potatoes. Hmm… this one leh, it tastes not bad but I still think the Chicken Teriyaki served in Zapin Restaurant (in Queensbay Mall) in still the best. The chicken here tastes sweet but a little hard. Also, I have a funny feeling that they served me normal rice instead of the Japanese Rice.

In a few minutes, Mrs Mayat’s claypot udon arrived:

Again, the serving is HUGE.

It came with an Ebi Tempura (that’s udang goreng for you), mushrooms, egg, kacang buncis and other stuff la besides the udon noodles.Mrs Mayat claimed that it tastes okay but not that great. Hmm..

By the time we finished our food, our stomachs were bursting and my pants exploded. Hence, I excused myself to the toilet…

The

WAAAAHHH… VERY CLEAN LEH!!!!

After the waitresses cleared our table dessert was served (on the house) which is a scoop of coffee ice cream with a slice of very thin watermelon. Ha ha ha.. kiamsiap sungguh.

The total bill came up to RM58.30 which consists of 10% service charge (BOOOO….) The Sushi is RM17, Chicken Teriyaki RM16 and Claypot Udon RM20.

We left the restaurant feeling full and satisfied.

So would I recommend Isaribi Tei ?

Well… if you have an itch for Japanese Cuisine when your stomach is super empty, this will be the right place to go to. Price is a little bit on the high side but you get HUGE servings which is very good.

Sakae Sushi is the worst Japanese Restaurant in town. It is originated from Singapore.

Online order menu also lousy, I bet it paid peanut to fresh grads to do that for them.

RM1 for green tea, self service, small tea bag, one time. After two rounds of hot tea, it became so diluted and you don’t want to drink it anymore. Not to mention the food lousy and super expensive somemore.

If you ever see the Sakae Sushi in Singapore for their so called ‘buffet’ Sushi offer, it is the crappiest buffet in the world.
